Road to the Horse will welcome an exciting new addition in 2027 as the Mustang Heritage Invitational Freestyle makes its debut Thursday, March 18, at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena. The special evening event will spotlight the artistry, athleticism and partnership between mustang trainers and their horses in an inspiring freestyle competition held as part of the World Championship of Colt Starting.
Renowned for captivating audiences, mustang freestyles showcase the remarkable journey from wild to willing, revealing the trust, communication and dedication behind every performance.
“At its core, Road to the Horse is about trust, kindness and the journey,” stated Tammy Sronce, Director of Operations for Road to the Horse. “The Mustang Heritage Foundation and Road to the Horse share these same values, and we’re proud to bring the American Mustang to center stage while honoring the partnerships these trainers have created with their horses.”
The journey to be selected for the Mustang Heritage Invitational Freestyle begins with the Virtual Freestyle Challenge, open through Aug. 1, 2026. Competitors will submit performances for a chance to qualify for the Mustang Heritage Foundation Finals, held Oct. 21-24 at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh, Indiana. From there, select standout performers recognized for their creativity, horsemanship and connection will earn the opportunity to compete in the Mustang Heritage Invitational at Road to the Horse 2027.
Fully integrated into the Road to the Horse 2027 event, the Thursday Freestyle Invitational promises an unforgettable experience, blending sport, storytelling and live performance into a one-of-a-kind special event.
Road to the Horse 2027 will take place March 18-21 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky.
