Rob Leach is one of Australia’s leading performance horse trainers, with a training philosophy centered on developing confident, willing horses. His versatility and achievements as a horseman are a testament to his belief that a solid foundation is the key to success in any discipline.
A three-time Australia’s Greatest Horseman Champion, Rob competes successfully across multiple disciplines, including reined cow horse, campdrafting, and cutting. He has won some of Australia’s biggest campdrafts and consistently sets the bar at the country’s premier horse sale, The Nutrien Classic.
Rob attributes his success and refined training methods to the thousands of horses he has started over the past 30 years. Growing up in the Victorian High Country—where The Man from Snowy River was filmed—Rob developed a deep love for cattle and horses. Eager to pursue that passion, he left school early to work for a prominent Thoroughbred breaker near Melbourne. It wasn’t long before the allure of Australia’s outback—with its vast cattle stations, wild horses, and skilled stockmen—drew him to the Northern Territory.
There, he quickly rose to the position of head stockman on a two-million-acre cattle station before venturing out on his own, starting colts for some of the largest cattle operations in Australia. By the age of 21, he had already started more than 500 horses. It was during this time that Rob honed his skills as a horseman and developed the system he has carried throughout his career. He realized the importance of teaching a horse to think rather than react under pressure, establishing his core belief that support, preparation, and consistency—through positive reinforcement—are key to developing a confident, reliable, and disciplined horse.
With the influence of his father-in-law, John Quintana, Rob sought to gain more experience in the cow horse industry, which led him to California. There, his horsemanship and work ethic propelled him into the competitive arena, where he won and placed at numerous NRCHA-aged events. He later moved to Texas for several years, focusing on starting two-year-olds for high-profile cutting programs, including those of NCHA Hall of Famer Roger Wagner and four-time Road to the Horse World Champion Chris Cox.
During his years abroad, Rob was privileged to ride exceptional horses and learn from some of the most influential horsemen in the industry, including mentors such as Ed Robertson, Jake Gorrell, Doug Williamson, and many others.
Ultimately, Rob and his family returned to Australia, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and experience. Now based in Tamworth, New South Wales, Rob operates Rob Leach Equine, focusing on training, competing, breeding, and conducting clinics. He remains dedicated to training each horse to reach its full potential—giving them the confidence to excel in any arena.
