Born and raised in Guthrie, Texas, Buster McLaury has spent over 30 years following his passion and cowboying on several large ranches throughout West Texas.
With a lifelong passion for horses, McLaury’s approach to horsemanship took a different route when he met Ray Hunt in 1985 after Hunt was hired by the Four Sixes Ranch to start colts.Skeptical at first, McLaury was cautious of the master horseman but considered himself a changed man by noon on the first day after he was mesmerized by the relationships Hunt established quickly with the colts. McLaury developed a strong admiration for Hunt, and he knew he wanted to learn everything he could from him. McLaury wanted his horsemanship to share the same magic.
Over the next 25 years, Hunt became a friend and mentor to McLaury and later introduced him to fellow horseman Tom Dorrance. Continuing to manage and cowboy on multiple large ranches allowed McLaury to be horseback every day, permitting him to fine-tunethe horsemanship principles that Hunt and Dorrance introduced to him.
In 1997, McLaury was called to assist a person who was having difficulty training a horse. Soon after, another person called for help, and large ranches followed. Before long, McLaury had built a reputation as an elite horseman who was in demand for all aspects of horsemanship.
In 1999, McLaury and his wife, Sheryl, began operating a custom colt starting business. Together, they managed a small crew and visited various ranches, ranging from 20-70 colts at a time.
Today, McLaury continues to operate a custom colt starting business based out of Paducah, Texas. Additionally, McLaury and his wife offer a variety of horsemanship camps and clinics.
McLaury is grateful for the opportunities horses have given him. As a humble cowboy from West Texas, horses have allowed him to explore 49 of the 50 U.S. states and two foreign countries, and his horsemanship journey will now accumulate as a Wild Card competitor at Road to the Horse 2025. “I’m honored to be a Road to the Horse 2025 Wild Card Competitor. This is a very prestigious event, and it’s humbling to be invited. I thank God for this opportunity. The Bible says in Proverbs, ‘Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.’ I’ve always said there’s nothing I wouldn’t try with Sheryl by my side, so she will be my Pen Wrangler at Road to the Horse 2025.” — Buster McLaury
